The fundamental role of technology in enhancing education for underprivileged children

June 27, 2023

The Van Empel Goldman Foundation is dedicated to increasing the life standard of underprivileged children in Indonesia. As it turns out, technology can play a huge role in the improvement of the quality of education, especially in developing countries. Here’s why:

Bridging educational gaps

In underprivileged areas where poverty is an issue, traditional educational resources and infrastructure may be limited. However, technology can serve as a powerful tool to overcome these barriers and provide equal access to quality education. Technology can bridge educational gaps in underprivileged areas by providing access to online learning resources, virtual classrooms, and interactive educational tools. It enables self-paced learning and expands educational opportunities beyond traditional boundaries.

Reaching remote areas

Technology has the potential to overcome geographical barriers and reach children in remote areas where traditional educational infrastructure may be lacking. By providing access to technology-enabled learning, such as online platforms or digital devices, children in isolated or hard-to-reach locations can receive a quality education. This helps bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, ensuring that children in underprivileged regions have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.

In underprivileged areas, there are often disparities in access to quality education based on socioeconomic factors, gender, disabilities, or other forms of marginalization. Technology can help address these educational inequalities by providing a more inclusive learning environment. For instance, assistive technologies can support students with disabilities, while mobile learning initiatives can reach marginalized populations, including girls and children from ethnic minorities. By leveraging technology, educational opportunities can be extended to all children, irrespective of their backgrounds.

Technology can help overcome resource constraints that often limit educational opportunities in underprivileged areas. Digital devices, such as tablets or laptops, can provide access to educational content and interactive learning experiences without the need for extensive physical resources like textbooks or stationery. Additionally, internet connectivity, although it may be limited, can still offer access to online resources, digital libraries, or educational videos that supplement classroom learning.

How we are utilizing technology:

One example of how we use technology to further educational opportunities is our collaboration with the LautBiru Project. LautBiru Project (LBP) focuses on delivering community empowerment programs that are designed particularly for women and children, and include a strong focus on education. We have launched a new project in collaboration with LBP) to support 70 students in their transition to hybrid education, as about 60 percent of students in Indonesia currently still do not have access to digital technology devices and are therefore not able to access the online element of their education. We helped those students by providing them with educational materials such as the Indonesian Government’s Education Curriculum and attractive and interactive education tools to stimulate students.
